Adverbs of manner

1. We use adjectives to describe people or things, but we use adverbs of manner to describe how something happens or how a person does ( or should do) something.

2. Adjectives give us more information about nouns, but adverbs of manner give us more information about verbs.

3. Adverbs of manner usually appear after the verb or after the object if the verb takes one. They do not appear between the verb and the object.

4. We can put an adverb of manner in a sentence.

5. We form adverbs of manner from adjectives.

6. Remember that an adverb describes how something happens or how someone does something while an adjective describes people or thins.

7. Be careful with the following adverbs.  They look similar but have different meaning.

  • hard (with a lot of effort)

  • hardly (almost not)

  • high (to a great height)

  • highly (very)

  • late (not on time)

  • lately (recently)
