Giving advice & making suggestions

1. We use should, ought to, had better, have to and must to give advice.

2. We use the bare infinitive after words giving advice. We form the negative by adding not.

  • should (not)

  • ought (not) to

  • had/'d better (not)

  • (do not)  have to

  • must (not)

3. Had better is more forceful than should and ought to. We use it to warn people that if they do not follow the advice, something bad will happen.

4. We use have to and must to give strong advice.
